Basic Linux-ing

Today I started reading the book or guide Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference off the internet that I found on Google Books Site. So today I learned what I never knew, kernal. After GNU had grown enough, it was kernal that lacked the project. Kernal being the fundamental hardware contributor was resolved by Linux Torvalds who created Linux combining the name Linus and Unix. Because his project was free, many lend him a hand and now IBM is one of the company that controls the kernal.

It is mentioned in the book that this OS still has a debate on calling it what GNU/Linux or simple Linux. Stallman's gift of free software became another concept that is still used today. There are hundreds of version/distributions of Linux.

  • It focuses on the desktop users;
  • Ubuntu's philosophy and community;
  • Ease of use.
Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Ubuntu mentioned that "Microsoft has a majority market share in the new desktop PC marketplace. This is a bug, which Ubuntu is designed to fix."
